Dan Napper makes his return to headphones with his new tune “YOU”- available everywhere now! Taking on modern RnB grooves and combining them with angsty lyrics, Napper creates the civilised musical alternative to a “f*** you”. 

‘YOU’ takes a shift in feel and producer for Dan Napper, marking his debut track with Matt Mayzner in the producer seat. Mayzner takes Napper’s sound to a different space with ‘YOU’, furthering his core elements of RnB and sending listeners on a 3-minute journey of groove and angst.

‘YOU’ takes the confident bravado of ‘Nightfall’ and the vulnerability of ‘I’m Never Loving Again’ and meshes them to create a modern reproduction of early 2000’s RnB music. The basis stems from returning session players George Robertson and Tom Proudlock, and their perfect rhythmic chemistry, but also from recent addition Charlie Wallace, who lays down perfection on the black and white keys. 

No one gets out of life without hurting, being hurt, wronging someone or being wronged by someone, the best you can do is let it be, live and groove through it. ‘YOU’ is the background track to prevailing through this. “‘YOU’ is a song written in real time, it’s a burst of emotion, mostly frustration and realisation of someone’s fundamental flaws. It’s written as I felt this wave of relief from pain, and it was replaced with this feeling of angst”

The sonics of ‘YOU’ take from a wide range of music from Maroon 5 and John Mayer all the way to Olivia Dean. With its retro 2000’s vibe of timbre, most the weight from the song sits between the drums, bass and keys, Napper’s rhythm section take complete charge.

The lyrical themes of this new track are different from Nappers previous releases, the vivid lyricisms and poignant melody cut into the listener, leaving them with as much of the frustration. You feel like you’re really transported into this feeling of contempt for whoever has wronged you, this song perfectly transports you into that feeling.

To celebrate Dan Napper’s upcoming release, there shall be a show at Liverpool’s Paul McCartney Auditorium on the eve of the 28th of April, counting down the clock till to the midnight release of ‘YOU’
